Whilst wandering the beach on my recent holiday, I was struck by an idea for a potentially cool table. There was a bunch of shells and coral on the beach, which I thought could be used to make a table of terrain representing an alien planet. I also caught part of an excellent documentary on the Great Barrier Reef which explained how coral is formed, which triggered my thoughts about the the complex organic patterns in coral (I also read a little Lovecraft whilst away which also led me down this path).
I didn’t end up stuffing my bag full of dead coral, as I wasn’t sure the legality of collecting it and didn’t want to face customs declarations late Sunday night upon my return. That said, it could be a cheap option if you live near a beach where it’s legal to collect and keep some of the washed up items. However, a quick look on eBay also revealed that there is a plethora of fake coral options you could utilise for terrain (which seem very cheap), and I imagine a trip to your local aquarium store would also yield similar finds.
So, there’s a cool little idea I may pursue in future to give some variety to my tables. If you end up having a go at this, let me know how you go!
