Battle Report: Marvel Universe Miniatures Narrative Session

on September 18, 2018

Tomsey recently invited us over for some Friday night gaming, and when the question of what to play came up, Tomsey requested I bring my Marvel miniatures for a ‘one off scenario driven adventure’. Intrigued and excited, I readily agreed.

After Action Report

Opening play, Monkey and I were assigned Daredevil and the Punisher as our characters (I, of course, took Frank), who have heard reports of citizens acting violently leading to the police cordoning off the effected city block. Punisher and Daredevil arrive on the scene, with the streets empty, all they can hear is the sound of dubstep thumping from a nearby nightclub.

Daredevil senses people engaged in “zombie-like” dancing inside the club and proceeds to kill the power. The Punisher opens the front door of the club and looks inside, seeing 50-60 people with black ooze coming out of their eyes and ears.

Heading around to the back of the club, the Punisher climbs to the roof, and as he crests it, a sword narrowly misses his head. Punisher vaults up, delivering a punch straight into the stomach of an agent of The Hand, pushing him back. Daredevil joins Punisher on the roof, whilst the Punisher delivers another blow which drives the ninja off the roof. Daredevil uses his grapple sticks to follow the Hand agent down and finishes him off.

Meanwhile the Punisher searches the roof of the club, finding a pack containing a vile of black liquid, a stimpack, and a slip of paper with characters he doesn’t recognise on it. Entering the nightclub from the roof, he moves through the top floor VIP lounge finding nothing. He then heads back out via the rooftop and down to re-join Daredevil and explains what he’s found.

A loud crashing from Flamin’ Amy’s Burrito Barn across the street attracts our heroes attention, with Sabertooth emerging, holding a syringe of the black ooze and someone he is trying to inject with the ooze. The Punisher brings his rifle up and fires at the syringe, hitting expertly and seeing the syringe shatter and cover his arm with the ooze, and he throws the hostage away. Daredevil then throws a billy club at Sabertooth, hitting him on the nose.

At this point, Sabertooth begins to run, shouting curses and complaining about not getting paid enough. The Punisher and Daredevil then move to the Burrito Barn from opposite sides, and quickly sweep the building, finding nothing of interest but pointing two civilians in the direction of safety.

Whilst this is happening, several of the zombies in the nightclub have realised the front door is open and begin to amble towards the noise being generated up the street…

Heading over to the nearby petrol station, the Punisher kicks down the back door, with a ninja star whizzing past him before he returns fire with his machine gun at the three Hand operatives waiting inside ahead of tossing a frag grenade in among them.

Daredevil attempts to heroically enter through the front window but slips on the way in and has his leg cut by broken glass. Recovering quickly he billy clubs the nearest Hand operative.

The Punisher unloads his Machine Gun into the Hand operatives inside the petrol station, taking them out, before turning his ire onto the symbiote zombies, which he knocks down with some well-placed shots. After dispatching the ninjas, a terrified civilian babbles about them trying to inject him, with Daredevil pointing him out in the direction of safety.

With one more location of interest in the vicinity, Daredevil and the Punisher head towards the nearby theatre, the Harmonic. Daredevil is ambushed from the top of the ice cream truck by another Hand operative as he cross the street. The Punisher quickly returns fire, hitting him twice but only injuring him, before Daredevil knocks him out with a well-placed Billy Club.

Carefully entering the Harmonic, the main stage has Elektra and three other Hand agents who have Venom chained down…

As Daredevil stands there wondering how they’re going to deal with this situation, our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman shows up, whilst the Punisher fires off his rocket launcher into the theatre, injuring everyone inside.

Venom, straining against the chains that hold him manages to tear loose from one of the four holding him. As Elektra dazedly tried to get to her feet, Daredevil is there and performs a takedown on her, rendering her unconscious. Seeing this, The Hand operatives swarm Daredevil, and bring him down under a flurry of blows, before Frank unloads on them with his machine gun. Spiderman then enters the fray, knocking out the last of the Hand operatives. Venom has been struggling, but remains unable to free himself at this point.

The Punisher uses the stimpack he recovered earlier on Daredevil, whilst Spiderman finds a piece of paper with similar symbols to the one the Punisher uncovered earlier. The Punisher shows him the other, at which point he thanks them before leaving to work on a cure for those infected with the symbiote. Deciding that it’s also time to leave, Daredevil and the Punisher make their way separately from the scene before law enforcement arrives…

Closing Thoughts

I had an outrageous amount of fun, the blend of RPG with tactical miniatures hit the right spot for me. Having an evening long one-shot feels about right but does make me pine a bit for my younger days when I had time and energy to dedicate to an extended campaign of either the miniatures of RPG variety. No doubt we’ll try and get some more one-shot style stuff to the table and I think Frostgrave might be calling my name from that perspective. Thanks to Tomsey for hosting and running this, as well as providing his usual excellent selection of beer to choose from.
