Hobby Progress – May 2018

on June 9, 2018

Plenty of progress this month, partly due to little actual gaming happening due to illness and business for me and my usual group. I’ve put in a new goal for the year to get all eight Shadespire warbands painted, as I’ve committed pretty heavily to the game at this point. On to the specific items.

Paint All Massive Darkness Models

Core set finished! I knocked over the last three models this month to round out the core set, and then took a break from painting these models to focus on other things to cleanse my palette. I struggled a bit with the demon model, I just wasn’t inspired to paint it, so I’ll get back to the rest of the Lightbringer pledge and expansions over the coming months.

Paint DCU Models

Dr Fate is done. I think I may have technically have finished him on the morning of the first of June, but I’m calling this one done for May, and the goal re-completed (until I end up purchasing more models…). Very keen to get some Marvel/DCU miniatures to the table.

Filling Out the Frostgrave Bestiaries

Lots of progress here this month. With the solo game in the first issue of Spellcaster magazine featuring undead, I decided to knocked out a stack of undead models to get ready to run that a couple of times. The zombies are from CMON’s Zombicide Black Plague which Monkey kindly lent to me for this purpose, whilst the banshees and wights are Pathfinder models. I also picked up the grim reaper looking model to use as some sort of generic lich/ghost/etc, it’s from the Reaper Bones range and it’s scythe handle is quite bent which is mildly annoying but I wasn’t able to fix it with either boiling water or my hairdryer so it stayed at the jaunty angle you see. I’ve still got my lich lord and a necromancer to go, but they hit the paint bench early-June so should be ready soon.

Now to work out a model to act as our hero who needs to escape the crypt…

Shadespire

This month saw me paint up Ironskull’s Boyz (orc/orruks), which was necessary given my love of orks and that this will likely be my favorite warband. I also painted up the skeletons as well, and whilst this is regarded as the worst (and hardest to play) warband, I figured they’d round out my undead horde for the Frostgrave solo dungeon crawl. Next up will be skaven and after that likely Garrek’s Reavers.

Conclusion

Super productive month with plenty of models out, and a milestone reached in completing the Massive Darkness core box. There’s a clear goal in mind for my Frostgrave build out which gave me some momentum, and I’m looking forward to having a crack at that over June. I’ll probably also want to get some more models together for This is Not a Test at some point as I’ve played two full games now and am loving it.
