Another Marvel Universe Miniatures Game hit out between Wyrm and I to close out January. Wyrm stuck with his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants list led by Magneto, and I grabbed my X-Men to make the match-up more thematic.
Wyrm’s force consisted of Magneto, Emma Frost, Lady Mastermind, Toad, Sabretooth and Pyro. I took Emma Frost, Jean Grey, Rogue, Colossus, Wolverine and Cyclops.
We rolled randomly for scenario out of the DCU rulebook and got Power Zones, which requires a character to roll 2d8 plus it’s power stat and score above 15 to enter them and you score by having the only models within the zone. Wyrm got the choice for deployment zones and cleverly dropped me in the corner with fences and terrain to navigate out of.
Round One
I win the initiative this turn, and everyone moves out of my deployment zone as quick as they can (except Wolverine who makes a single move to be in contact with Colossus).
Round Two
I win the initiative again (although I would rather have not had it) and started with Colossus throwing Wolverine toward the Power Zone on my right flank, and then moving straight after him.
Toad moves twice to the zone on my right flank and attempts to enter it but fails.
Wolverine moves twice and attempts to enter the zone but narrowly fails and instead is left glaring at Toad.
Wyrm uses his pass.
My Emma Frost moves forward towards the zone where Wolverine and Toad are facing off.
Pyro moves forward towards the zone on my far left flank.
Jean Grey flies forward at the zone on my left flank, with Wyrm’s Emma Frost and then Cyclops also heading towards it.
Lady Mastermind moves.
Rogue flies towards the zone on my left flank.
Sabretooth moves towards the left flank zone, and also uses Pounce to get into the zone on my left flank.
Magneto flies towards Rogue and uses Meatgrinder on her, which scores a critical hit and deals four damage.
Wyrm scores two victory points for controlling the zone with Sabretooth this round.
Round Three
I win initiative again… Rogue flies into Magneto and makes an overloaded Superstrike attack which hits him, causing him to smart a little.
Lady Mastermind does a Power Transfer to Magneto then fires Psychosomatic Symptoms on Rogue to drop her Willpower, followed by Terror Visions which isn’t effective as she passes her Willpower. She then moves out of sight.
Colossus moves towards the zone on my right flank.
Toad takes off making a double move up onto the water tower.
Wolverine attempts to enter the zone and fails.
Pyro does an overloaded Pyroblast on Rogue which hits and then moves.
My Emma Frost moves towards the zone on my right flank.
Magneto flies up onto the building and fires an overloaded Meatgrinder attack at Rogue which hits, and then he moves back.
Jean Grey flies into the zone on my left flank and double overloads Psychic Illusions on Sabertooth which scores a critical hit.
Wyrm’s Emma Frost uses Drain Psyche then Psybolt on Rogue which sees her incapacitated.
Cyclops fires a Focussed Beam attack at Magneto who cancels it, then makes the same attack again, hitting, before moving towards him.
Sabretooth moves into contact with Jean Grey and makes an overloaded Feral Attack which just misses.
No victory points this turn, with Jean Grey contesting one zone and Wolverine having failed again to enter the other.
Round Four
Wyrm wins initiative this round and starts with Pyro, who moves towards Cyclops and makes an overloaded Pyroblast which hits.
Cyclops makes an overloaded Massive Blast attack on Sabretooth but misses.
Lady Mastermind Power Transfers to Emma Frost then climbs over a car and fires overloaded Pistol attack at Cyclops which crits.
My Emma Frost moves into the zone on my left flank (at last!)
Wyrm’s Emma Frost climbs over a car towards Cyclops, cast Drain Psyche on him, followed by an Astral Bolt, which fails as Cyclops passes his Willpower test. She then fires a Psybolt which misses before transforming into Diamond Form.
Colossus moves into contact with Wolverine and throws him up onto some nearby shipping containers towards Toad.
Magneto flies out and makes an overloaded Meatgrinder attack on Jean Grey which hits. He then uses Master Tactician to activate Sabretooth.
Sabretooth follows up with an overloaded Feral Attack on Jean Grey, then an overloaded Claw Attack which also hits.
Wolverine gets up and makes two moves across the table towards the zone on my left flank.
Toad makes a double move to position himself to slow Wolverine down.
At this point Wyrm and I chatted through a few options and worked out I wasn’t going to be able to make up enough victory points to take the lead so we called it there.
Conclusion
This was a brutal game, and I got severely punished for splitting my team in two. Having half the team, both by numbers and points moving over to an uncontested zone for the game really cost me, especially when I couldn’t get control of it initially. My deployment zone hindered me a bit, but I think I could’ve deployed a bit better to get around this next time. Wyrm rightly pushed a refused flank play and just dominated me around that zone. Well played on his part and taught me a few things about my team and how to play that mission.
A triumphant Magneto floats above the battle field, satisfied that the Bortherhood has prevailed.
