To kick off the new year, Wyrm and I got together for a hit out of Marvel Universe Miniatures Game. Following on from our last game, Wyrm again took his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, whilst I was keen to get the Avengers to the table to test out a list different to those I’d played before including Hulk as a big hitter (and with an eye to how it’d perform against Zod and crew).
Wyrm’s team was led by Magneto, supported by Toad, Lady Mastermind, Emma Frost, Pyro and Sabertooth. I ran Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther, Thor and Vision.
We were playing on Wyrm’s post-apocalyptic detention camp table again with a good mix of terrain to play over and something at almost every size. We rolled randomly for scenario out of the DCU Miniature game rulebook and ended up with Big Combat, which tipped the scale in my favour initially given Hul would be lining up against Magneto.
Round One
I won initiative, despite Emma Frost’s trickery with the dice with Hulk grabbing MAgneto and throwing him back towards the rest of my team.
Magneto gets up and uses Blunt Instrument on a nearby car, with Cap using Shield Block to cancel the attack. Magneto then flies away attempting to avoid my team.
Vision drops two power into Thor using Power Transference, then flies up next to Hulk intending to buff him next turn.
Pyro moves forward and fires a Pyroblast at Vision.
Thor flies at Magneto and overloads his Bring the Thunder attack scoring a critical hit for six damage at which point Magneto is promptly KO’d.
Toad moves forward and makes an overloaded Toad Spit attack on Vision which scores a critical hit.
I use my pass from having fewer models, and Wyrm counters with his pass from Magneto.
Cap moves towards Magneto and makes a Shield Bounce attack which scoresa critical hit and sees Magneto incapacitated.
Sabertooth moves into contact with Black Panther and makes an overloaded Feral Attack, but misses.
Black Panther responds with a Claw Slash followed by a Savage Strike on Sabertooth both of which hit.
Lady Mastermind fires her pistol at Vision and hits.
Emma Frost moves forward and unloads her abilities into Vision for two damage.
Vision has sustained quite a bit of damage at this point and fails to remain conscious.
Round Two
I win initiative, again despite Wyrm having additional dice in the bag.
I activate Vision who gets up, transfers two POW to Hulk and then flees.
Emma Frost activates and uses Drain Psyche and Paralyse Mind on Hulk. She then follows up with an overloaded Psi Bolt attack on Hulk which scores a critical hit.
I pass.
Sabertooth makes an overloaded Feral Attack on Black Panther which crits. He then attempts to grab the Panther but misses.
Hulk attempts to overcome Paralyse Mind but fails the will power check and is stuck standing uselessly for the round.
Lady Mastermind moves forward and casts Terror Visions on Hulk and then makes a Mortal Illusions attack on him which hits for two damage.
Cap makes a double move up next to Hulk.
Pyro unloads a Pyroblast at Hulk which Cap Shield Blocks, and Pyro fires off another which hits Hulk.
Black Panther makes a Claw Slash on Sabertooth, critically hitting, then makes a Savage Strike attack overloaded for knock down which also crits. Sabertooth is down but remains conscious.
Toad uses his Toad Spit on Hulk and scores a critical.
Thor activates next and, realising I need to shut down PAralyse Mind, flies over to Emma Frost. He makes an overloaded For Midgard attack which hits.
All KO rolls are passed at the end of the round.
Round Three
Wyrm finally wins initiative.
Emma Frost goes first and uses Drain Psyche and Paralyse Mind on Hulk to start before shifting into Diamond Form.
Black Panther makes a Claw Slash on Sabertooth, but fails to hit his prone form. He follows up with a Savage Strike which hits.
Lady Mastermind fires off Psychosomatic Symptoms at Hulk, then follows it up with Terror Visions. She then casts Paralyse Mind on Thor.
Hulk fails his willpower test again so Paralyse Mind keeps him pinned.
Sabertooth stands up, moves to a nearby barricade and thorws it at Hulk.
Vision moves then uses Healing Nanites and fires Ghost Visions on Sabertooth which hits.
Pyro fires a Pyroblast at Hulk and hits.
Wyrm and I talked through a few options here, and then called the game as he wasn’t likely to be able to catch up.
Conclusion
This scenario was perfect for my list with Hulk ending up facing Magneto, which was then compounded by me winning initiative turn one, and felt a little bad about how one sided it was. Knocking Magneto out of the game round one saw me gain a basically insurmountable victory point lead. The scenario is interesting in how much it rewards having a bigger hitter character, but using those characters should balance out across other scenarios where board control is more important.
Wyrm’s excellent use of Emma Frost and Lady Mastermind to shut down Hulk was a stroke of genius. Having significant levels tied up like that really hurt and if I hadn’t gotten my early lead I would have struggled.
