January saw a swift start to the hobby year, as I was on holidays for the first week of the month, I filled plenty of that time with hobby work. I’ve set several specific hobby goals for the year, although these remain subject to change as priorities often shift as the year progresses. I’ll break down the progress I’ve made against each goal, so I can check whether priorities are shifting and to keep myself on track for the longer-term projects.
Finish the Chinatown table for Marvel
Excellent progress on this for the month, with several Knights of Dice buildings painted up over the month. As I’ve mentioned before I love these kits and have been knocking them out fairly quickly. You’ll notice the brickwork on the Rainbow Karaoke, which came together very quickly using street chalk, as Viv suggested in this video.
Build and paint more scatter for Frostgrave
Got a handful of small pieces done, very simple chunks of polystyrene covered in filler and spray painted similar to the ruins I discussed previously. I’m going to do a few more pieces like this, as well as work out what specific scenery I need for spells, scenarios and expansions and continue progressing on those as inspiration strikes.
Paint the DC Universe magic users
I managed to finish Zatana over the course of the month, relying heavily on this post from Opponent Theory. The other models have been primed and pre shaded and I’ll work through them next.
Paint all Massive Darkness models
This will be the biggest project of the year, however I’ve lowered the bar for the mobs, and so can get through them fairly quickly. I finished off the Hellhound then all the Goblin Archers this month, and will tackle their leaders and a couple more heroes next. I’ve also prepped the Nightmare Thing model for painting, as I’ll likely use this to play through the Dark Alchemy campaign for Frostgrave.
Paint my second Frostgrave warband
No progress on this for the month, all models are base coated brown and awaiting attention. This will likely be the lowest priority until we get Frostgrave back to the table.
Build and paint a Ghost Archipelago warband
I haven’t precisely worked out what I’m going to do here, although there are plenty of cool pirate models I’ve been eyeing off. Again, a lower priority pending interest from others in the game.
Fill out the Frostgrave and Ghost Archipelago bestiaries
I assembled a few monsters I’d purchased recently and they are now awaiting some paint. This has turned out to be a great way of purchasing some cool model and introducing some variety into my painting time.
Conclusion
A very productive month, and whilst I’d love to keep this level of activity up, I think without holidays in the coming months it’s likely to fall off a bit. I’m also curious to see how I go over the course of the year with sticking to these goals or whether priorities change.
