Wyrm and I had the opportunity for some gaming and decided to throw down some MUMG. A welcome return after a significant break since our last game.
We played the new DCU Miniatures Game standard game at 50 levels, rather than the 40 levels that was standard under the MUMG rules. I decided to run the Guardians of the Galaxy, with Dr Doom included to bring them up to an even 50 levels. Wyrm cracked out his Avengers team, running Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and Hulk.
Set-up
Wyrm had recently acquired a large set of the Knights of Dice Desert Buildings, with the intention to have them serve as an outpost in some sort of dystopian, police state future, perhaps a post-Sentinel X-men world. We agreed terrain as follows:
Size One – street signs, traffic cones, barrels
Size Two – dumpster, traffic lights, billboards, small barricades
Size Three – crate piles, forklift, large barriers
Size Four – cars, bus shelters, planter box
Size Five – emergency vehicles
Size Six – small buildings and the tops of larger buildings, construction equipment
Size Seven – large buildings and ruins
We rolled randomly for scenario and got Relic which we were both familiar with. As usual, each relic went down as close to our respective deployment zones as possible. We deployed and got straight into the game. I also had the ability on Dr Doom which allowed me to swap one of Wyrm’s initiative tokens for one of mine, so I used that in the hopes of getting the upper hand over the game.
Round One
Wyrm wins the initiative and has Black Widow pick up the relic she deployed on, then moved her back towards the rest of his team.
I move Rocket forward.
Ironman flies to the top of a nearby building
Groot moves directly towards the Relic
Thor flies forward and uses Hammer of Storms
Drax runs forward
Cap makes a two POW move forward, positioning for next turn
Gamora moves up next to Drax
Hulk runs over the top of the firetruck he’d deployed behind, then picks it up and flings it at Drax who luckily dodges out of the way.
Doom flies forward and fires off a Mystic Blasts at Thor but just misses.
Starlord flies onto the relic, fires a shot at Thor just missing, then grabs the relic.
Round Two
I use Perfect Plan from Starlord to pull one of my initiative tokens for the round. Starlord fires and overloaded Quad-laser attack at Thor, which scores a critical hit (despite Wyrm using Hammer of Storms and an extra defensive improvements). He then flies back towards my deployment zone with the Relic.
Hulk makes a Super Jump move forward, before using his Hulk Earthquake ability, hitting Groot, Drax and Gamora, who all manage to pass their agility tests.
Groot moves forward, uses I Am Groot on Thor (who can only move if he passes a willpower test), and then regrows.
Black Widow ducks away behind a building over in Wyrm’s deployment zone
Doom flies up Wyrm’s left flank, makes an overloaded Mystic Blasts attack on Thor, but misses.
Ironman throws the Slurm billboard at Groot, which hits for two damage and sees him knocked down. He follows up with Micro Missiles, which hit for four damage, punishing Groot given his weakness to fire. A small consolation is Hulk getting caught in the blast from the missiles. Ironman then fires a Repulsor Blast at Groot, but misses.
Rocket moves forward and uses an overloaded RPG shot at Thor but misses.
Cap moves forward before grabbing a dumpster and throwing it at Groot for another two damage.
Gamora moves to Thor and pops Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe, with an overloaded Blade Strike hitting and sending Thor into the pale.
Wyrm uses one of his passes.
Drax moves into contact with Thor and pops Fury, launching a flurry of Dual Knives attacks at Thor. The first scores a critical hit, the second misses, and the third hits and pushes Thor into the red, scoring still more damage. A fourth attack sees Cap step in with a Shield Block, cancelling the attack.
Thor makes an overloaded For Midgard attack on Drax, get sa critical hit and causes a load of damage as well as pushing him back.
Thor is KO’d, Drax remains standing.
Round Three
Wyrm wins the initiative this turn (and I crack a beer), and starts with Hulk, who moves into contact with Drax and Groot. He launches a Hulk Smash attack on Drax but misses. He then picks up a nearby car and throws it at Drax dealing five damage, which pushes him into the red. Drax remains conscious, but knocked down.
Groot gets up and moves to Thor, attempting to grab him. Cap attempts to Shield Block the grab but fails, seeing Groot launch Thor at Cap. Cap dodges the throw, and Thor ends up on the ground with one endurance remaining.
Ironman throws a Repulsor Blast attack at Drax which hits, and follows up with a second which also hits and sees Drax incapacitated. He then makes an overloaded Micro Missiles attack on Groot, which scores a critical hit.
Rocket moves forward and fires his Big Flarkin’ Gun hitting Cap, Hulk and Thor. Thor is incapacitated, Hulk fails agility but only takes one given his resistance, and Cap takes one damage. He follows up with Photon Pistols on Cap but misses before scurrying back.
Cap moves into contact with Gamora, attempts a Shield Strike but misses, before attempting to grab and throw her but also fails.
Gamora grabs Cap and throws him into Hulk, knocking down both of them and then moves towards Ironman.
Black Widow rounds the corner of the building she’s hiding behind and fires a Bullet Barrage at Rocket, hitting him for one damage.
Starlord flies over to my right flank, hiding out with the relic.
Dr Doom kaes a Mystic Blasts attack on Ironman but misses, attempts again and scores a crit.
Groot fails his stamina roll and is KO’d.
Round Four
I win the initiative and activate Gamora. She moves into contact with Ironman, makes a grab and throw attack, slamming him to the ground before following up with a blade attack on him. She then activates Master Tactician, which is successful.
Groot wakes up, uses Regrow to heal two endurance, before moving up next to Gamora.
Ironman gets up and and flies across to Rocket, grabbing him and tossing him into a nearby cop car.
Rocket gets up, moves and then uses Heavy Plasma Rifle on Ironman, but misses by one!
Black Widow moves further out on my right flank, fires another Bullet Barrage at Rocket,scoring a critical hit and seeing him KO’d.
Starlord jets up on top of the nearby building, attempts Trick on Black Widow who resists. He follows up with an overloaded Quad-Laser attack, but just misses.
Hulk gets up and moves into contact with Rocket. He makes an overloaded Hulk Smash on Rocket, which sees him incapacitated. Then hurls the cop car at Starlord, who dodges aside.
Doom teleports into contact with Black Widow, makes an overloaded grab attempt but fails miserably. Follows up with a Gauntlet Strike but also misses with that.
Cap gets up and moves towards Starlord and Doom.
Groot stays awake, but Ironman is KO’d.
Round Five
Wyrm wins initiative this turn, and starts with Black Widow who makes an overloaded Mixed Techniques attack on Dr Doom which hits, before she moves away.
Starlord makes an overloaded Quad-laser shot at Black Widow, but Cap Bodyguards it and takes the damage instead. He then flies over everyone’s head.
Hulk moves into contact with Doom and pops Fury. He throws an overloaded Hulk Smash which misses. He follows up with another Hulk Smash, scoring a critical, another Hulk Smash which misses and a final Hulk Smash which hits.
Gamora jumps down from the building then fires Blast Guns at Black Widow (to which Starlord calls out “you’re using guns now?!”), hitting her for one.
Groot moves down the building then uses Regrow.
Ironman gets a critical fail on his stamina roll, remaining unconscious.
Doom moves into contact with Black Widow, and makes an overloaded grab on her. Cap attempts to Shield Block, but fails (second time this game!), but Doom again just fails to grab her.
Cap moves into contact with Starlord and makes an overloaded grab on him but misses with a double one!
Round Six
I win initiative and Doom makes an overloaded grab attempt on Black Widow. Same roll as prior turn – just missing again! He then makes an overloaded Concussive Blasts attack on Cap, hitting with a critical.
Cap makes an overloaded grab on Starlord, hits and tosses him away, seeing the relic dropped and one VP for Wyrm.
We call the game there, as I’m not going to be able to claw back a VP to draw it, let alone win.
Conclusion
It was fun and refreshing to get MUMG back to the table. Wyrm outplayed me this game, partly due to our relative familiarity with our teams. His use of Ironman’s Micro Missiles on Groot maximised the weakness to fire, and the use of Hulk’s various abilities at crucial times was also well played. I think there’s a lot of potential for the Guardians, but it seems they have synergy which can only be unlocked with experience. I’d also forgotten how hard it is to get VP’s in these games, with only three really on offer, and each being difficult to achieve. I had great fun, though, and am looking forward to the next play.
