Wyrm and I had a somewhat unplanned game of Marvel Universe Miniatures Game (“MUMG”) in early June, both of us being slightly rusty after having not played for some time. I ran my street level team, including Spiderman as Tomsey had his painted up and we were playing at his place, and Wyrm ran an Avengers team (his Black Widow will be Evil Black Widow as we both had Ms Romanov in our teams).
The Teams
Wyrm
Captain America, Thor, Ironman, Evil Black Widow, Hulkbuster and House PArty Protocol team card
Me
Spiderman, Punisher, Daredevil, Elektra, Black Panther, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Deadpool
Set-up and deployment
We decided to play the Energy Pillars scenario as we hadn’t played in a while and it always feels like a good scenario.
Tomsey’s usual table was set-up, with terrain agreed as follows:
Size One – stop signs, barrels, bins
Size Two – barriers, benches, trees, the ice box
Size Three – concrete statues, large signs
Size Four – cars
Size Five – trucks
Size Six – buildings
Round One
I win the initiative and activate the Punisher, moving him to the edge of the petrol station into a position he should be able to snipe out over the two nearest pillars.
Wyrm activates Thor and flies him into contact with Elektra, overloading a For Midgard attack which hits and pushes her back into the nearby truck.
Elektra, who I suspected would be out of action shortly, makes an overloaded sneak attack right back at Thor and manages to score a critical on double eights, triggering assassin and doubling the damage.
Evil Black Widow moves forward and fires an overloaded Bullet Barrage at Elektra which misses, before doing the same again and hitting.
Hawkeye moves forward and fires two Standard Arrow attacks at Thor, with both hitting and contributing a couple more points of chip damage.
Ironman flies forward into contact with the energy pillar and Elektra, and makes an overloaded grab and throw on Elektra which just hits and incapacitates her.
Black Widow activates the pillar she was deployed next to on my right flank.
Cap makes a double move forward to get near to Ironman and Thor.
Deadpool moves forward and makes two Bang-Bang attacks on Cap, both of which miss.
Hulkbuster flies into contact with the middle pillar, then makes an overloaded Gatling Guns attack on Black Panther which hits.
Spiderman makes a Web Swing forward then fires off two overloaded Impact Webbing attacks at Hulkbuster, but both miss.
Daredevil uses Grapple Sticks to move forward, before firing off a Throwing Club at Hulkbuster but misses.
Black Panther moves into contact with the middle pillar and activates it.
Round Two
I win initiative again and start with Spiderman. After carefully considering all options and deciding that tactically it would make best sense for him to try and grab the left flank pillar and try and take out Thor, I move into contact with Hulkbuster and attempt a throw as that seemed too cool an option to pass up. He missed horribly though, so it would have to wait for another day.
Ironman flies over to the middle pillar and makes an overloaded grab and throw on Black Panther but luckily for me it misses.
The Punisher makes an overloaded Machine Gun attack on Ironman, which hits.
Thor moves toward the middle pillar and makes an overloaded For Midgard attack on Black Panther which hits.
Deadpool moves into contact with Ironman and overloads his Armour Buster attack which hits.
Evil Black Widow makes an overloaded Bullet Barrage on Black Panther but misses, then moves to the pillar on my left flank and flips it for Wyrm.
Black Widow makes two overloaded Bullet Barrage attacks on Ironman, both hitting.
Cap moves twice into contact with Spiderman and launches an overloaded grab but Spider Sense sees this canceled. He follows up with a Shield Strike which Spidey isn’t quick enough to avoid.
Hawkeye uses his Deadshot arrow on Ironman and hits, then follows quickly with a Specialist Arrow which also hits and incapacitates him.
Hulkbuster makes an overloaded grab and throw on Spiderman but misses with two ones, with an overloaded Great Punch also missing.
Daredevil Grapple Sticks over Thor’s head, then makes an overloaded Spin Kick attack on him, pushing him back into Black Panther.
Black Panther attempts an overloaded grab on Thor but fails to get a grip on him.
Thor fails his stamina check, becoming KO’d, whilst Black Panther is able to remain conscious.
Round Three
Wyrm wins initiative this round, and activates Thor who wakes up. He throws a For Asgard attack at Black Panther which misses by one, following up with the same again also missing by one point.
Deadpool moves into contact with Thor and makes an overloaded Stab-Stab which scores a critical hit, pushing Thor into the red zone and KO’ing him. He then follows up with a further Stab-Stab on Thor’s unconscious form.
Hulkbuster moves away from the pillar and cluster of heroes around it, and makes an overloaded Unibeam attack on Spiderman, also lines up Black Panther and Deadpool, it misses the first two but hits Mr Pool.
Black Panther activates and grabs Thor, tossing him aside and ultimately incapacitating him.
We called it there, with Wyrm not having the models to meaningfully claw back the game from me.
Conclusion
The street level team wins again, what the characters lack in hitting power they make for being able to out-activate most teams and having some attacks and abilities that synergise well. Spiderman felt surprisingly useful and it inspired me to revisit the model, fix the casting issues and get him painted up. We were both quite rusty on the rules as well, so looking back we missed a few things over the course of the game although I’m not sure they would have made a significant impact. It was a fun game and a good opportunity to get a couple of different models to the table in Spiderman and Hulkbuster.
