For the third and final game of MUMG on Good Friday, I had a rematch against Tomsey’s Dark Avengers. Given how badly I was beaten Game One by them, I was hoping that I could at least make it competitive this time. The team’s comprised Venom, Sentry, Green Goblin, Ares and Ms Marvel for Tomsey’s Dark Avengers and Cyclops, Colossus, Rogue, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Emma Frost with the Uncanny X-Men team card for my X-Men team.
We again stuck to the same agreed sizes as the other two games, namely:
Size One – rubbish piles, barrels, rubbish bins, and stools
Size Two – trees, signs and barriers
Size Three – statues
Size Four – Cars
Size Five – Trucks
Size Six – shipping containers and the burrito barn
Size Seven – Big container, crane and nightclub
We rolled up the Getaway scenario, which gives victory points based on controlling deployment zones (i.e. having more models than your opponent in a zone). Controlling your own deployment zone yields one VP, two VPs for the opposing deployment zone, being the first to get two models in one round into your opponent’s zone and having all your models survive also give two VPs each.
Round One
I win initiative round one this game which is refreshing, how good is Mastermind? Colossus starts out by throwing Wolverine forward before taking off after him.
Venom uses Symbiote Instinct then moves forward.
Jean Grey flies forward.
Ares moves forward and pounces to get into contact with a nearby car.
Rogue flies forward.
Sentry flies forward into contact with Rogue. He makes an overloaded grab on her, throwing her into a nearby building.
Cyclops moves forward and makes an overloaded Massive Blast attack (Details) on Sentry, which hits.
Green Goblin fails his Serum roll, and just flies forward cackling maniacly.
Emma Frost moves forward and makes an overloaded Psi Bolt attack (details) on Sentry which hits, putting him in the pale zone.
Ms Marvel moves forward and makes a Light Beam attack on Wolverine, just missing.
Wolverine makes a double move forward into contact with Venom and makes a Snikt attack which fails to hit.
Despite a fairly boring first round, Sentry fails his stamina roll and becomes KO’d.
Round Two
I win initiative again, luckily as I expected that Sentry would get up and start wreaking havoc. Jean Grey moves forward and makes an overloaded Electric Psychokenisis attack on Sentry, which scores a critical hit. She then follows this up with an overloaded Psychic Illusions attack (Details), hitting and incapacitating him.
Venom activates and pops Fury immediately, before making an overloaded grab on Wolverine, which hits and sees Venom slam him down on the other side, staying in contact. Venom then makes three Claw attacks (details) all of which hit.
Wolverine gets up, looking very angry after the punishment Venom dished out. HE makes an overloaded The Best There Is attack (Details), which hits.
Ms Marvel uses Force Blast (details) on Wolverine, which scores a critical and incapacitates him. She then makes a Light Beam attack on Colossus, but isn’t able to conect.
Rogue gets up and flies forward, then throws a nearby barricade at Venom, who isn’t able to get out of the way in time.
Seeing this, Ares then hurls a car at Rogue, who also fails to dodge, before hightailing it into the nearby park.
Colossus, seeing the fun being had, also decides to try car tossing and throws one at Ares, also managing to hit.
Green Goblin moves forward and does two Fly Past attacks (details) on Rogue.
Cyclops moves forward and makes an overloaded Optical Devastation attack (details) on Ares, then follows up with a Focused BEam attack (Details) on him which crits.
Emma Frost moves forward and overloads a Psi Bolt attack on Green Goblin which hits.
Despite the brutality dished out this round, everyone remains conscious.
Round Three
Another turn with initiative going to me. I start with Cyclops, and make an overloaded Optical Devastation attack on Ares, which scores a critical hit, followed by an overloaded Focussed Beam, which hits. I attempt Master Tactician but fail.
Ares activates, making a move then Pounce to get into contact with the dumptruck, which he picks up and throws at Jean Grey, who manages to dodge out of the way.
Emma Frost uses Drain Psyche (details) on Ares, then uses an overloaded Psi Bolt attack which scores a critical hit and incapacitates him. At this point Tomsey and I realise that we haven’t held our own deployment zones which would’ve accrued us victory points (play the mission!), so Emma attempts to get back to mine, but falls short.
Venom moves into contact with Rogue and makes an overloaded Claw attack (details), which hits and incapacitates her.
Colossus moves slightly and throws a nearby barrel at Venom, attempting to knock him down, but Venom dodges out of the way.
Green Goblin flies forward at Jean Grey and makes a Razor Bats attack (Details), but misses. He follows up with a an overloaded Razor Bats attack which scores a critical on Jean Grey.
Jean Grey makes a Psionic Blast attack (details) on Green Goblin which hits, then follows up with an overloaded Psychic Illusions attack on him which also hits.
Not sure what Ms Marvel did this round, but don’t think it had significant impact.
Sentry redeploys at the end of this round from his Unstable ability, getting Tomsey a victory point for controlling his deployment zone.
Round Four
Tomsey wins initiative this round, and Venom starts off, moving into contact with Jean Grey. He attempts a Claw attack but misses, before grabbing her and throwing her towards the centre of the table.
Jean Grey gets up, makes an overloaded Psychic Illusions attack on Venom, which hits, then flies away.
Sentry flies out of Tomsey’s deployment zone and pops Fury of a Thousand Suns, which manages to hit Colossus, Jean Grey and Cyclops. Cyclops manages to get mostly out of the way, but the other two are caught by the full fury.
Emma Frost makes an overloaded Psi Bolt on Green Goblin but misses, before shifting into her Diamond Form (+3 to defences and +2 to strength, but can’t use any special powers) and moves back into my deployment zone.
Ms Marvel makes a Light Beam attack on Jean Grey but just misses.
Cyclops throws an overloaded Optical Devastation attack at Green Goblin, scoring a critical hit and incapacitating him. He then fires a Focussed Beam at Venom, but misses.
Colossus moves towards Sentry, grabbing him and throwing him into a nearby barricade.
Tomsey and I each score a victory point for controlling our own deployment zones.
Round Five
I win initiative, and Colossus moves back into contact with Sentry and makes an overloaded Crushing Smite attack (Details), which hits.
Sentry gets up and throws a Deathblow attack (details) at Colossus but misses. He then attempts a grab, having more luck he picks him up and throws him.
Cyclops moves towards Tomsey’s deployment zone, and makes an overloaded Optical Devastation attack on Sentry which hits which pushes him into the red zone, however isn’t enough to KO him.
Venom moves towards my deployment zone and makes a Symbiotic Tendrils attack on Emma Frost, which hits.
Emma Frost makes an overloaded Psi Bolt attack against Venom which hits, after which she falls back deeper into my deployment zone.
Ms Marvel throws an overloaded Light Beam at Cyclops which hits, and then moves back into her deployment zone.
Sentry fails his KO roll at the end of the round, and Tomsey and I both score a victory point each for controlling our deployment zones.
Round Six
Tomsey wins initiative and activates Sentry, who wakes up. He then moves into contact with Cyclops and makes Deathblow attack but misses. This is followed up by an overloaded grab, which hits and Cyclops is tossed aside.
Colossus gets up, moves to Sentry and throws him into a nearby tree, incapacitating him.
Venom moves to Emma Frost and makes an overloaded grab, throwing her straight back.
Emma Frost gets up and moves into contact with Venom, grabbing him and throwing him out of my deployment zone.
Cyclops wakes up and moves towards Venom, making an Optical Devastation attack which hits.
At the end of the round, Venom is KO’d and Tomsey and I each score a further victory point for controlling our deployment zones.
Conclusion
So, final score is four to three, in favour of Tomsey, making it a clean sweep of losses for me over the day. The key thing in this game was remembering to play the mission, rather than letting bloodlust take over and running around trying to incapacitate all Tomsey’s models. Luckily Tomsey also forgot about the mission initially, but was better placed to recover once we realised. If I played this again, I would’ve left Rogue in my deployment zone to lock those points in, as she really isn’t able to be played aggressively, given my experience over the last few games seeing her incapacitated early.
This was a fun set of games, and it was good to get several played in quick succession, as it let me come to grips with some of the strengths and weaknesses of my X-Men team a little quicker.
